Diamond Valley and District Boys & Girls Club

DATE: November 6, 2000. Volume 3, Issue 20

THE PERSON: Jane Olsen, Assistant Director with the Diamond Valley and District Boys & Girls Club in Alberta.

THE ORGANIZATION: The Diamond Valley and District Boys & Girls Club provides support services to children and youth in their community. 'At risk' youth are a special interest, and they run a homework club, especially for those kids who do not have access to computers, or who need extra help.

MEMBER SINCE: October 1999

MOST RECENT GRANT: $2,500 from the Carthy Foundation

CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME: They are a community program in a rural area with no foundation or corporate offices nearby.

CRUCIAL STEPS TO ATTRACTING FUNDERS: Her initial efforts met with minimal success. After working with BIG Online's Customer Support Department Jane realized her message had to clearly demonstrate community need. Instead of focusing on the benefit to the club as a whole, they now emphasize the benefit received by the children. Her second step was to call the Carthy Foundation and discuss her program. Jane feels that, although no commitment was made on the phone, this conversation allowed her to express the realities of the Diamond Valley Community, and explain why the services of Diamond Valley and District Boys & Girls Club are needed.

RESULTS: A cheque for $2,500.00 was received for the educational and social skills program of the Diamond Valley and District Boys & Girls Club.
